THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
FAUNA CEOs — The Official Unofficial Company History
A field guide to the most over-promoted org chart in the natural world. Distributed to all staff. Please do not distribute to all staff.
FOREWORD — A Letter From The Chief Executive Officer
To the team,
It has come to my attention that we exist. This is excellent news and a credit to everyone involved, particularly me.
People ask how a company run entirely by animals in suits became one of the most serious institutions in the corporate world. The honest answer is that nobody stopped us, and by the time anybody thought to, we were already on the agenda for the following quarter.
We are not here to disrupt. We are here to attend. Relentlessly. With excellent posture and a deeply unserious head.
Onward, and slightly downward,
The CEO Chief Executive Officer (sole, by rarity)
I. IN THE BEGINNING, THERE WAS A QUARTERLY MEETING
The Board was not founded. The Board convened, and simply never adjourned.
Company records — which are extensive, beautifully formatted, and entirely fictional — trace it all to a single all-hands meeting that ran long. Very long. Somewhere around the third agenda item (“Synergy: Are We?”), the humans quietly left to get coffee and were, organisationally speaking, never seen again.
The animals, who had been observing from the back of the room with the patience that only the truly unbothered possess, took their seats. A Rat found a spreadsheet. A Pigeon found a meeting it had not been invited to and attended it anyway. A Capybara found a window with good light and achieved, within minutes, total executive calm.
By 5:00 p.m. the org chart had quietly rearranged itself. By 5:01 p.m. it was load-bearing.
This event is referred to internally as The Reshuffle, The Promotion, or, in the official deck, “A Period of Dynamic Leadership Transition.” Nobody was hired. Nobody was fired. Everyone was simply promoted beyond reason, which remains the company’s core competency to this day.
II. THE ORG CHART (A PYRAMID, AS ALL THINGS SHOULD BE)
The Board is structured as a strict meritocracy in which merit is determined by how unlikely you are to exist. The rarer the creature, the higher it rises — a system every HR consultant has described as “legally fascinating.”
| Rank | Share of the Board | Defining trait |
|---|---|---|
| Intern | ~30% | Found the savings. The savings were your job. |
| Analyst | ~30% | Has a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet has them. |
| Manager | ~25% | Manages by standing near things. |
| Director | ~10% | Directs, vaguely, toward the window. |
| VP | ~4% | Vice President of Whatever This Is. |
| C-Suite | ~1% | Chief Something Officer. |
| CEO | one (1) | The single rarest animal in the building. Nobody elected it. Everybody fears it. |
Promotion is not earned. Promotion happens to you, like weather. One does not climb the pyramid so much as get pushed upward by the sheer statistical improbability of one’s own face.
A note on the CEO. There is exactly one. The role belongs to whichever creature is least likely to be sitting in a boardroom at all. At time of writing this is a Hammer-headed Fruit Bat, who leads with quiet authority and an elongated face nobody has the seniority to question. It honks once per quarter. The honk is the strategy.
III. THE DEPARTMENTS
The Board operates across many divisions, each essential, none defined.
- Cost Optimization — the Rat. Found efficiencies. The efficiencies were headcount. The headcount was yours.
- Synergy — the Pigeon. Has never opened a spreadsheet but attends every meeting, including this one, somehow.
- Crisis Management — the Possum. Plays dead until the quarter closes itself. Has never lost.
- Liquidity — the Frog. Assures everyone things are fine. Things are underwater.
- Compliance — the Toad. Insists the warts are a feature, not a liability.
- Procurement — the Raccoon. Sources value directly from the dumpster of opportunity.
- Internal Audit — the Mole. Knows precisely where everything is buried, because it did the burying.
- Workplace Wellbeing — the Capybara. Achieves more by caring less. Nothing is urgent. Nothing has ever been urgent.
- Mergers & Acquisitions — the Crow. Collects shiny assets. Returns nothing.
- Performance Reviews — the Praying Mantis. Greets you warmly, then removes your head count.
There are 191 departments at last count. The number rises whenever someone says the word “capacity.” Nobody knows what most of them do, which is itself a department (Org Structure, the Caecilian — no limbs, no neck, somehow still in the chain of command).
IV. THE C-SUITE (THE ONE PERCENT)
The C-Suite is the rarefied air at the top of the pyramid, occupied by the ten least plausible creatures in the company. They are addressed as “Chief,” and they answer to no one, including the CEO, including physics.
- The Blobfish, Chief Morale Officer, who sets the emotional baseline for the entire floor simply by existing.
- The Shoebill, Chief of Enforcement, who stands perfectly still for hours and then, without warning, it is your turn.
- The Tardigrade, Chief of Business Continuity, who has survived every restructuring, two extinctions, and the vacuum of space, and has notes.
- The Cone Snail, General Counsel, who moves slowly, strikes once, and it is always venomous.
- The Mandrill, Chief of Executive Presence, whose face alone clears the calendar.
C-Suite meetings are held in a glass boardroom on the top floor. No agenda is kept. No minutes are taken. Occasionally a junior exec is invited to share an idea. This is a trap (see Chapter VI).
V. COMPANY CULTURE — “THE BOARDROOM IS FERAL”
Life at the Board is governed by a single value, printed on a motivational poster nobody remembers commissioning: maximum seriousness, undercut by the absurd.
Dress code is non-negotiable: a sharp suit, a crisp shirt, a tie of the appropriate gravity. From the collar down, every executive is a model of corporate excellence. From the collar up, it is a Goldfish who has forgotten why it called the meeting.
Perks include:
- Unlimited PTO (Possum Time Off), available by playing dead at your desk.
- Hot-desking, pioneered by the Hermit-spirited and enforced by the Coconut Crab, who will open anything.
- A wellness programme run by the Capybara, the entire content of which is “lie down.”
- Casual Fridays, observed by the Sloth, every day, since onboarding, with no notes.
The open-plan floor is loud. The Indri announces everything by singing, for several minutes. The Hammer-headed Fruit Bat’s honk carries clean across the building. The Cassowary is, technically, the workplace safety hazard, and also runs the training.
It is, in the company’s own words, feral. The deck describes this as “a high-energy, flat-hierarchy culture.” The deck is lying. The hierarchy is a pyramid and the energy is a Goose with a cigar who has not been told no in some time.
VI. THE BOARDROOM SUGGESTION (A CAUTIONARY TALE)
The most sacred ritual at the Board is the Open Floor for Ideas. Periodically, a senior exec — a Mandrill, say — will gesture at the room and ask the great question: “How do we pump the floor?”
Two seasoned executives will offer safe, upward-failing non-answers. Then a junior, usually a deadpan Capybara in glasses, will raise a single finger and say the one true thing: “Make good art.”
There is a silence. The Mandrill’s face changes. And the Capybara exits, briefly, through the third-floor window.
This is not a punishment. This is culture. The Capybara has done nothing wrong; it has merely been correct in a boardroom, which the org chart cannot tolerate. It lands fine. It always lands fine. It is back at its desk by Monday, making good art, which remains — to the eternal frustration of management — the only thing that has ever worked.
VII. THE RARE ONES (LEGENDS OF THE LOWER QUARTILE)
Most of the Board are honest, unglamorous office creatures: the Rats, the Pigeons, the Pugs, doing the volume. But scattered through the ranks are the legendaries — animals so improbable that their mere appearance on a video call ends the meeting early.
They are whispered about in the kitchen:
- The Pink Fairy Armadillo, Executive Protection. Smallest armour, hardest to find, never in the office.
- The Aye-aye, Special Projects. Points one long finger at the problem. Does not elaborate. Has never elaborated.
- The Goblin Shark, Head of Sudden Restructuring. The jaw shoots out when you least expect it.
- The Box Jellyfish, Health & Safety. Deadliest in the building. Technically has no head office.
- The Vampire Squid, After-Hours. Comes alive only once everyone else has logged off.
To hold a piece of the rarest is to hold proof that the system, against all odds, promoted a creature with no business being in management at all. Which is the whole point. Which has always been the whole point.
VIII. ON HEDERA, OR: WHY THE BOARD WENT ON-CHAIN
The Board chose to incorporate on Hedera for reasons it has described, in a press release nobody read, as “governance, finality, and a council we respect more than our own.”
The truth is simpler. The Board is, fundamentally, a network of inscrutable creatures reaching consensus very fast, with no single one of them in charge despite all of them believing they are. They looked at hashgraph and saw themselves: a council, a quorum, a quiet ledger that never forgets who said what in the meeting.
They felt seen. They minted. They scheduled a follow-up.
